Sand & aggregate
Cubic yards to tons in a sand pit
Volume becomes weight only after an appropriate bulk density is supplied.

Use measured density
Cubic yards describe volume and tons describe weight. Moisture and compaction change bulk density, so there is no universally correct conversion for sand. Ask for a representative density for the specific material and condition.
Show assumptions
Multiply cubic yards by short tons per cubic yard to estimate short tons, and label the result as an estimate until verified by scale or other measurement. Never silently use a generic density in billing.
In practice
1,200 yd³ × an assumed 1.35 short tons/yd³ = 1,620 estimated short tons; validate the 1.35 assumption locally.
