Surface mine workplace examinations

A practical reading of 30 CFR § 56.18002 for surface metal and nonmetal working places.

Published by Mine-Pro · Surface mining operations and recordkeeping

Examine before work begins in each place

A competent person designated by the operator examines each working place at least once each shift before miners begin work there. Hazardous conditions require prompt notice to affected miners and action to correct them; imminent danger triggers withdrawal requirements.

Make the record before shift end

The record identifies the examiner, date, locations examined and adverse conditions found. Add the date of corrective action when a condition is corrected. The rule requires at least one year of retention and access for authorized representatives and miners' representatives.

In practice

Record the north haul road and active loading bench separately, then tie each observed condition to its correction date.
