Reconciling equipment hour meters

Catch impossible readings before they distort utilization and maintenance.

Use both ends of the shift

An opening and closing meter reading produces operating hours when the meter behaves normally. Flag a negative result, an implausible jump and a handoff gap for review.

Keep the correction visible

A mistyped digit can be corrected with an audit trail while retaining the first submission. Never silently rewrite the original and then derive downstream totals as if no correction occurred.

In practice

Start 1,242.6 and end 1,251.1 yields 8.5 hours; an end of 1,151.1 needs review, not a negative utilization figure.
