Underground mining

Underground mining methods: an introduction

A plain-language overview of access, extraction and ground control.

Methods follow the deposit

Room-and-pillar, longwall, cut-and-fill and other methods suit different geology, commodity and economic conditions. Access may be by shaft, decline or adit. The chosen method shapes equipment movement and ground support.

Different operational needs

Ventilation, refuge, communications and escapeways are central underground. Mine-Pro's current public product examples focus on surface operations; this article is educational and makes no claim of underground workflow support.

In practice

A surface sand haul cycle and an underground shuttle-car cycle should not be treated as identical operating models.
